An update on the Canonbury West people-friendly streets neighbourhood

Islington Council has been carrying out work to introduce the Canonbury West people-friendly streets neighbourhood, which includes traffic filters at Canonbury Place, Alwyne Road, Ramsey Walk, and Clephane Road. Unfortunately due to some of the newly installed signs being vandalised, construction is taking longer than we anticipated. We now expect to unveil the currently covered signage on Monday 9 November, once construction has been completed.

So, please be aware that from Monday 9 November any motor vehicle (except for emergency services) travelling through the traffic filters will be subject to a Penalty Charge Notice. Waze is already displaying the restrictions and therefore this app or website is the easiest way for you to find routes that avoid the traffic filters. It is expected that the measures will display on Google Maps shortly. You can find a map of the scheme and images of the filters in the update leaflet here.

There will be a bedding-in period following the unveiling of the signage as drivers get used to the new routes, but experience in Canonbury East and St Peter’s has shown that after a few weeks this will settle down and the residents of Canonbury West will be able to enjoy the benefits of people-friendly streets, which are safer, healthier and quieter for local residents and all road users.
